Greater Manchester has some great green spaces - but we need more and we need better. Greening Greater Manchester (GGM) aims to give people the chance to make their places more green through small grants to eligible groups and organisations.
We provide grants to support local community groups and environmental organisations with area-specific projects. In the last ten years this has amounted to over £4 million of total funding. GGM is managed by Groundwork for the benefit of neighbourhoods across Greater Manchester.
Greening Greater Manchester aims to:
- ENGAGE communities in green projects that bring benefits to local people
- EMPOWER communities by giving people a say in the decision making process
- PROVIDE an opportunity for people to have a role in shaping their environment
- HELP generate a sense of community ownership
Greening Greater Manchester has funded a diverse range of projects in the last decade. This work has included:
- Consultation work over proposals and plans for new or improved green spaces
- Encouraging residents to take part in physical environmental improvement works
- The creation of new green spaces ranging from parks to ponds.
Aftercare and long-term management is vital and GGM encourages project proposals that include a plan to sustain the project beyond the funding period.
The funding is provided by Biffaward. Biffaward seek to support projects that are particularly innovative, of lasting community and environmental benefit and improve quality of life.
GGM projects are assessed for the level of innovation, community benefit and involvement, partnerships with relevant groups, and to what extent the projects contribute towards sustainable development.
